Redistricting

School board redistricting in California involves the process of redrawing the boundaries of school districts to ensure fair representation based on population changes. This process is guided by the FAIR MAPS Act, which was expanded by Assembly Bill 764 to include school districts, community college districts, and county boards of education.

The Act requires local agencies to follow strict procedures when transitioning from at-large to by-trustee area elections or when redrawing existing trustee area boundaries. The goal is to enhance public awareness and involvement in the redistricting process, ensuring that district lines reflect and empower diverse communities. The California Citizens Redistricting Commission plays a significant role in redrawing district boundaries for statewide elections, while local governing bodies handle the redistricting of local districts such as school boards.
