Glenn County Spelling BeeTop of Page

Schools from Glenn County are invited to participate in the Glenn County Spelling Bee, which is held at the Memorial Hall in Willows, CA.  Students in grades 5 through 12 are eligible to participate.  The Glenn County Spelling Bee is a written competition, with students allowed to miss two words.  Each student receives a Certificate of Participation, and the winner in each grade level receives a trophy.
 
The high school competition (grades 9-12) awards a medal to each grade level winner. The winner at each grade level then competes for an overall high school winner. The overall high school winner receives a trophy.
 
Winners in grades 5-9 are eligible to participate in the two California State Spelling Bee competitions.

Glenn County High Schools are invited to participate in the Academic Decathlon. The Decathlon is an academic competition in which 9th through 12th grade students compete as individuals and as team members in a series of ten tests and demonstrations.
 
The makeup of each of the nine-member teams include:
  • Three “A” students
  • Three “B” students
  • Three “C” students
Academic Decathletes take 30-minute multiple-choice tests in:
  • Economics
  • Art
  • Music
  • Language and Literature
  • Mathematics
  • Science or Social Science
  • Super Quiz
In addition, each team member:
  • Gives a prepared 4-minute speech
  • Gives an impromptu 2-minute speech
  • Sits through a 7-minute interview, and
  • Has 50 minutes to write an essay

The only event open to the public is the last event of the day – the Super Quiz Oral Relay, which deals with either a Science or Social Science topic.
 
Glenn County is one of 42 counties and districts in California participating in the California Academic Decathlon. Competition for the 2009-2010 Academic Decathlon is scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 6, 2010. This year’s Super Quiz topic is “Introduction to Evolutionary Biology". The winner of the Glenn County Academic Decathlon is eligible to go to the state competition in Sacramento.

Glenn County Elementary Science FairTop of Page

The Glenn County Science Fair is for students in grades Kindergarten through 8th.  Students may enter projects as an individual, a small group (2-4), or a large group (5 or more). There are three categories in which projects may be entered: 1) Scientific Experimentation; 2) Demonstration; or 3) Invention.  Ribbons are awarded in each category at each grade level.
 
The following schedule is followed for this year’s Science Fair:

March 15 & 16Set up projects at Glenn County Fairgrounds in Orland
March 165:00 p.m. - Judging of projects
March 17 & 18School Field Trips; Open to the Public
March 1811:30 AM - Take down projects

The Glenn County Elementary Track Meet is held each year at the track at Willows High School.  Over 300 students participate each year.  Events for boys and girls include:
  • One Mile Run
  • 50 Meter Run
  • 100 Meter Run
  • 200 Meter Run
  • 400 Meter Run
  • 800 Meter Run
  • 4 X 100 Meter Relay
  • Softball Throw
  • Long Jump
  • Sit Ups
  • Shot Put
Ribbons are given out to each age level (10 – 14 years) in each event.
